Spring Cleaning Checklist
As you begin preparing for your annual spring cleaning, consider this checklist that will help you save money in the warmer months ahead and improve your home’s appearance.
o Water heater: Lubricate circulating pump and motor. Flush out deposits. To save gallons of hot water per shower, change to new shower heads. To reduce energy, set temperature to 120°.
o A/C Unit: Clean unit and lubricate motor. Clean evaporator and condenser air conditioning coils. Don’t forget to change filters every month. Hire a professional for an annual pre-season check-up.
o Air ducts and vents: Look for clogs of dust, cobwebs and visible mold. Clean vents and if necessary hire a professional to remove gunk to boost its efficiency.
o Windows and doors: Check sills and thresholds and fill cracks, caulk edges, repaint or replace if necessary. Clean screens and check for holes. Patch holes or replace screen if necessary. Tighten and repaint any loose or damaged frames and repaint. Replace broken, worn, or missing hardware. Wind can ruin screens and frames if they are not securely fastened. Tighten and lubricate door hinges and closers.
o Siding: Look for signs of damage and moisture stains. Clean siding with a pressure washer to keep mold from growing. Check all wood surfaces for weathering and paint deterioration. If paint has chipped, sand, prime and paint.
o Exterior Caulking: Inspect caulking on walls, windows, and doors. Replace if deteriorating. Scrape out all the eroding caulk and re-caulk needed area.
o Gutters and Downspouts: Remove leaves and debris. Reattach gutters that have been pulled away from the house. Run a hose from the roof and check for proper drainage. If leaks exist, dry the area and use caulking or epoxy to seal the leak.
o Drain Waste and Vent System: Flush out system.
o Foundation: Check for cracking, heaving or deterioration. If you can slide a nickle into a crack in your concrete floor, call a professional.
o Roof: Inspect roof surface. Look for cracked caulk or rust spots on flashing, damaged, missing or broken shingles, cracked and worn rubber boots around vent pipes, missing or damaged chimney cap. If you find masses of moss and lichen it might signal the roof is decaying underneath. Remove moss and apply moss killer along the ridge of the roof and on any green patches. Check the age of your roofing and see if it’s close to the end of its life.
o Deck and porches: Check for deterioration and loose parts. Decks should be treated every 5 years, depending on how much sun and rain they get. If the wood has turned grey, hire a professional to treat it.
o Sprinklers: Check the lawn sprinkler system for leaks, exposed lines, and improperly working heads. If necessary, call a professional to fix any problems you can’t fix by yourself.
o Landscape: Trim all plants, bushes and trees. Cut all limbs that are too close to your house to prevent any damage. Overgrown tree limbs that are above or close to your roof must also be trimmed to prevent damage to the roof.
